Adana Turkey: Insider Tips, FAQs & Links

Air Transportation

The full name of the Adana Airport is Adana Sakirpasa airport. It is 41kms away from the city center. There is shuttle service available which costs about $2 USD or taxi service which will cost around $25 USD. The telephone number for Sakirpasa Airport is: 90.(322) 435 9186.

You can fly with Turkish Airlines from Istanbul to Adana -- the 1 hour 10 minute flight costs about $110 (one way). You can book the flight directly with
Turkish Airlines - in the USA call toll free 1 800 874 8875.

Train Transportation

Reliable train service operates between Istanbul's Haydarpasa train station (on the Asian side) and Adana. There is one departure daily at 11:50pm. It takes about 19 hours. Cost of a one-way ticket is about $16. The Adana to Istanbul train departs daily from Adana at 2:10pm. The trains are clean, comfortable, air-conditioned and usually have a dining car. We suggest that you purchase tickets directly at Haydarpasa station in Istanbul or the Adana station (or have a travel agent get the tickets for you). You can also make reservations by phone (but they only speak Turkish) at (322) 453 6914.

Driving Tips

Speed limits are generally 80 kms to 110kms on highways. Within the city speed limits are 50kms. There are speed traps on major highways. In addition, random police check points are common in Turkey. You may be surprised to see military soldiers with rifles looking ominous at some of these points. Do not be afraid. If you are stopped - just present your papers, and in moments you will be back on your way.

Roads & Road Conditions

In general the Turkish highway system is a very good one. Well maintained 4 lane highways connect Turkey's larger cities so travel is comfortable and quick. Roads within larger cities are paved 2 lane roads and maintenance condition varies per city. Small towns usually have a few paved 2 lane roads, but you move out of the towns, road conditions are worse and you may find dirt roads. Most roads to ruin sights will be dirt roads.

How Safe is this City?

Adana is a very safe city (as most Turkish cities are). But as in any big city, we recommend you be aware of pick-pockets and common petty thieves. Keep your cameras, valuables, purses and wallets close to you. Although these incidents are uncommon, it is good practice to be prepared.

Health Tips

Water from the tap is for use, like for washing, you should not drink it. To have drinking water - I recommend the bottled water that is securely closed. This water is good quality and you can find it in any grocery shops and restaurants. Always carry a bottle of water with you whenever you are sightseeing. Do not drink the bottled water with tin foil tops (they are sometimes filled with tap water). The Turkish word for water is "su". Drinking water is "taze su", pronounced "ta-zey sue"

The best hospital in Adana is Adana State Hospital at Riza caddesi Seyhan, in the city center. Tel no: (322) 321 5752

FAQ "Hi Selma, My Sister and Husband are moving to Adana's US Airforce Base.  My question is what commercial airport in Turkey would I use as my destination. How far is Istanbul from Adana? Is it a modern city? What about shopping for leather products? What airlines would you recommend, and will New Year's be good to go in terms of economics, things to do, weather, etc."  - Christopher, Hepmstead, NY
Adana Airforce base is one of the largest bases in Turkey. There are direct Turkish Airlines flights from NY Kennedy to Istanbul with Turkish Airlines. From Istanbul you can get a connecting flight with Turkish Airlines to Adana. Adana is situated in the middle of an agricultural area - but Adana is a modern city - the fourth largest in Turkey. You will find everything you need there. Your leather shopping can be done in Adana - my advice is to find the Bazaar - you can usually find good quality inexpensive leather products there. I hope this helps and have fun!

FAQ "Hi, I currently live in Adana at Incirlik Air Force Base.  I was looking for Turkish
Towels while shopping in Adana but have not be able to find them.  Do you know of a store and directions where I could find these? Thanks" Lisa -
Adana, Turkey
The best Turkish towels are from Bursa. The cotton quality is world famous. You can usually find these towels in local Turkish towel and bedding shops (not the fancy ones - just the ones that the regular Turks get their towels), or in a bazaar. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of a particular store, but there should be several in Adana. Take a day off (if you can) and explore Adana. The Turks in Adana are some of the nicest people in the world - they'll point you in the right direction.
