Spectacular. Breathtaking. Historical.
Unforgettable.
Located on the south end of town. During the winter, the 285-foot
waterfall freezes into beautiful blue-white stalactites and stalagmites.
But in the summer, a crescendo of white, foaming water thunders over the
gray-black cliff onto rocks in a cave. Then it tumbles through a crack
in the floor of the canyon below, playfully tossing up mist to onlookers
above. After viewing the falls from below, take the stairs up to a
covered lookout where you can soak in vistas of majestic mountains.
The Audubon Society has designated this site
as an important area and may host the largest colony of Black Swifts in
Colorado.
In winter, the cliffs along the side of the canyon are covered with
water which the freezes to form huge cascades of ice. These ice cliffs
have become an ice climbers dream. Ouray has become one of world's
premier ice climbing destinations.
Location
Located at the north end of Ouray on
Highway 550, north of the town center. It is situated on the east side
of the road. Follow the signs. Free parking is available. Grassy areas and picnic tables are available for public
use.
