Things To Do in Ouray |

Fall |
Do the loop. Anytime between
September 15 to October 15 you will be able to see Aspens changing to
brilliant yellows and florescent oranges all along the San
Juan Skyway, a 235 mile loop drive through the dramatic mountains
and forests of the San Juan and Uncompahgre National Forests. Arguably
'the' great drive in Colorado, the San Juan Skyway is a drive to the top
of the world. In the Fall - drive from Cortez to Silverton - The days are
shorter and the sun shining behind the Aspens makes them more yellow and
the sun won't get in your eyes as much.
Drive straight through to Telluride - but go slowly through Rico as this
one of the most beautiful parts of the trip. Stop at Trout Lake right
before Telluride for a beautiful view. Walk around Telluride, take
the free gondola to the mountain village, have lunch in Telluride at
the Eagle's Nest. As you drive through to Ridgeway, pay attention to the wooden fence on your right side that surrounds one of the most beautiful views in the world - this is Ralph Lauren's ranch - it's huge! What did he pay for that fence?! There is a lookout there on the right where you can stop to take photos. Onto Ouray a very pretty small town built in a box canyon. In town, go to the Ouray Museum. Driving out of town stop at the Box Canyon Falls. From Ouray to Silverton you will have a few miles of very scary driving - and you will be on the outside edge, so take it slowly - this part of the drive is one of the most beautiful. Onto Silverton through the most colorful part of the trip. Walk around Blair Street and Green Street. Stop at the lookout at Molas Pass for a Kodak moment. You can eat dinner before you get back to Durango and avoid the crowds. Stop at the Hamilton Chop House right before the entrance to Purgatory / Durango Mountain Resort and hopefully, if you time it properly, you will be there for sunset and the Aspenglow. Great steaks, game and fish although a bit expensive. Get the Hamilton Chop House Coupon here. If you prefer something less costly, we recommend the Schoolhouse Pub - right across from the Needles Conoco about 2 miles past Purgatory / Durango Mountain Resort. It's very local, smoky and mountain casual (which means that most of the time the patrons are dressed) but the pizza is fabulous, and the wings and caesar salad is excellent. It is also very reasonably priced. There is no coupon, but tell Ikis that Swat sent you and you can play pool all night for free. |

Winter Thanksgiving to Easter |
Ouray Ice Park in the Uncompahgre Gorge. The spectacular Ouray Ice Park is the only one of it's kind in the world. It is a public park, open to public for ice climbing lessons, demos & climbs. Even if you are not a climber, take a drive (or walk) up to the park to see the climbers scale the 100 foot walls of ice - it is a unique experience. This year the park will extend its length by an additional half-mile to accomodate the growing numbers of ice climbing enthusiasts. The popular Arctic Wolf Ice Festival will be held January 17, 18 and 19 this year. | |
