The
full name of the Los Angeles Airport is "Los Angeles
International Airport" (LAX). Here are just a few
major domestic airlines: American
Airlines , Continental Airlines,
Delta Air Lines,
United Airlines.
Transportation from the airport to
the city is available through bus, train, free hotel shuttles and taxi.
Many hotels provide free shuttle service and we
recommend you check with your hotel first before making transportation
arrangements. You can
reach downtown also via train by taking the Metro
Green Line and transferring to the Metro Blue Line at its
intersection. The Blue Line operates between downtown and Long Beach

Amtrak trains
connect Los Angeles with over 500 cities worldwide. Amtrak also runs
trains up and down the California coast, connecting San Diego, Los
Angeles, San Francisco, and all points in between. There are multiple
trains each day.

Freeways
going east and west have even numbers, and north-south roads have odd
numbers. Most freeways have a name, as well as a number. Ask for both
when you're getting directions. Call boxes with free phones are placed
every half mile along the freeways for emergencies.
Listen
to traffic reports before you start. Nearly all radio and TV stations
have them during commuting hours. Radio stations with all-news or
all-talk formats are good bets during the day. |

Los
Angeles is a large sprawling metropolis. Busses do run throughout the
city and on freeways, but transportation is slow and can be dangerous
(we recommend renting a car). Fares are around $1.60, transfers are 25¢.
The downtown area has a shuttle named "DASH"
that operates buses throughout downtown and the west side of L.A.
Service runs every 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the time of day, and

Metro
Blue Line, an above-ground rail system, connects downtown Los
Angeles with Long Beach. Trains operate daily from 6am to 9pm; the
fare is $1.35.
Metro Green Line, runs for 20 miles along the center of
Interstate 105, the Glenn Anderson (Century) Freeway, and connects
Norwalk in eastern Los Angeles County to LAX. A connection with the
Blue Line offers visitors access from LAX to downtown L.A. or Long
Beach. The fare is $1.35. |

Taxis
in LA are found at cab stands by the airport, Union
Station, and major hotels. Cabbies will usually not pull over if you
hail them (very frustrating) so either find a stand or as we said

Los
Angeles enjoys a warm temperate climate and mild weather all
year-round. It never gets much over 80F or below 45F.
Average temperatures:
January is between 45F (7C) and 65F (18C).
July is between 63F (17C) and 83F (28C).
Los Angeles has a
mild and pleasant climate year-round. However, the rainy season lasts
from November through March (the heaviest downpours are usually in
January). Summers are sunny and warm but the famous Los Angeles smog
at its worst. People with asthma and respiratory ailments should
beware and take precautions.

Now
that we talked about water lets talk about toilets. The USA definitely
has a clean public restroom shortage! Public restrooms in the USA are
usually located in public buildings and train stations, but I would
not recommend using these - they are usually not too clean. My advice
is to use the restrooms in your hotel, museums, shopping malls,
department stores or restaurants. Use the restroom when you find a
good one. However, my experience is that when I need one - I can never

In
Los Angeles you are not permitted to
smoke in public buildings, sports arenas, elevators, theaters, banks,
lobbies, restaurants, offices, stores, small hotels,
bed-and-breakfasts, and bars. Some restaurants have set up outdoor
smoking areas to accommodate smokers. |

Los
Angeles is a large city where you should exercise caution. If you are
driving, keep doors locked and windows closed (do not leave open maps
lying on the dashboard of you car). Do not drive through areas that
are not familiar with. There are many homeless, so don't be alarmed if
you're approached for spare change. At night, be careful and use common sense. |
